Film destroys opera?

So I read in the NYT that film is destroying opera.

Ok this is particularly ridiculous.  Since most new operas in the USA are composed by film composers one could just as easily argue that film saves opera.

That's not the main point.

Film as an art is not the problem at all but the marketing of commercial culture, film, popular music, TV, Cable, Satellite  etc is.  What is inhibiting opera in the USA is mass media marketing.
One could argue that the rise of academic film studies programs has become more popular than opera studies perhaps. Certainly successful film folks make more money than classical music professionals.

I say this;

Give an opera the marketing budget of a blockbuster and see what happens.
